-Ph.D. FELLOWSHIPS-
Ocean Health and Environmental Change

The Center for the Dynamics and Evolution of the Land Sea Interface (CDELSI) invites nominations for Fellowships to support graduate students interested in interdisciplinary, marine-related research in the fields of Ocean Health and Environmental Change.

These Fellowships were established through a generous gift from an anonymous donor that was directed to Christina Ravelo, Director of IGGP, and Ken Bruland, Ida Benson Chair of Ocean Health to establish this fellowship and an associated research award program. The donor wishes to foster new interdisciplinary interactions among UCSC faculty, and to attract new interdisciplinary graduate students to UCSC.

The Fellowship program includes:
- One-year fellowships of $27,500 for first year students
- One-year fellowships of $20,000 for continuing students
- Up to five one-year fellowships will be awarded
- A second year of support for student fellows making excellent progress
- Applications should be submitted by the graduate student advisor(s)

Nominations for these fellowships are due February 6, 2006, and should be submitted by graduate student advisors.

Eligibility: We invite nominations of graduate students conducting research in Ocean Health and Marine-related Environmental Change. Priority will be given to student research focused on investigating the evolution, causes, and effects, of changes in oceanic systems. CDELSI is especially interested in fostering interdisciplinary interactions among faculty at UCSC and in supporting intensive cross-disciplinary training in one or more lab. Students currently enrolled in, or being recruited into, any departmental PhD program at UCSC are eligible.

Nomination Instructions

Introduction: We invite fellowship nominations from advisor(s) whose student is or will be conducting research in Ocean Health and Marine-related Environmental Change. (See eligibility criteria above.) We are particularly interested in using these fellowships to help recruit outstanding first year graduate students to UCSC’s graduate programs.

Selected fellows and their advisors will be expected to participate in a curriculum designed to foster interaction among fellows and to provide interdisciplinary training. For example, planned curricular elements include co-taught graduate seminars, mentorship activities, and participation in workshops and/or colloquia.

Funds can be used to cover student tuition/fees, stipend, and research expenses, and are intended to supplement other sources of funding from advisor’s extramural funding, and departmental or University fellowships or teaching assistantships.

Applications: Nominating advisor(s) should submit a nomination package that includes:

- a nomination letter from the advisor(s) detailing the student’s planned research, technical training, and other activities planned for the student. Nominations should demonstrate that the student has the proper training and background to carry out the proposed activities in a timely fashion.
- copies of transcripts and letters of recommendation from student’s file (required for new students and optional for continuing students)
- statement of student support available from other sources

Deadline: Should be submitted to Ms. Jennifer Fish, EMS Room A234A, Department of Earth Sciences. Applications are due no later than February 6, 2006.

Awards: Will be announced by March 1, 2006. Posters, talks, and written theses supported by this award must acknowledge funding from IGPP and CDELSI. Each fellowship award recipient must acknowledge CDELSI funding in their thesis, and provide a copy of their thesis to CDELSI.

Selection Criteria: A selection committee will be composed of CDELSI faculty and/or researchers who have not applied for one of these fellowships. Selection of fellowship recipients will be based on the quality and innovativeness of:

- The proposed interdisciplinary research plan and technical training
- Potential to use fellowship to help recruit outstanding first year graduate students to UCSC’s PhD programs
- Relevance to the themes of Ocean Health and Marine-related Environmental Change.
- Student’s past academic performance (transcripts and letters)
- Student’s past research experience
- Potential for enhancing diversity in the sciences
- Potential for enhancing interaction among UCSC faculty, fellows and other collaborators
