Annual CDELSI Competition
Undergraduate and Graduate Research and Travel Awards


CDELSI encourages interdisciplinary research and education at the land-sea interface:

Current themes within CDELSI include long and short-term dynamics of global and regional climate changes and impacts on ocean circulation; biogeochemical cycles; marine, terrestrial and landscape ecology; paleoclimatology and paleoceanography; geomorphology and hydrology; aquatic toxicology; human impacts and environmental economics and policy.

In 2006-07 CDELSI will award approximately:

ELIGIBILITY
Any undergraduate or graduate student at UCSC who is conducting research in an environmental science or related field lasting at least two quarters (through summer 2007), and whose work is clearly related to the interdisciplinary mission of CDELSI.
            Research Awards cover research expenses during the 2007 calendar year.
            Travel awards only support attendance and presentations at meetings from Fall 2006 through Summer 2007. Other travel must be requested as a Research Award.

APPLICATIONS AND DEADLINE

Applications should observe the page limits and contain all information listed below and on the website. They should be double-spaced; typed in black ink; have 1” margins; use a simple standard font (no smaller than Times 12 or equivalent); and have each page numbered. Adobe Acrobat (PDF) electronic submissions preferred.  

Completed applications should be submitted to Jennifer Fish (jfish@es.ucsc.edu), E&MS Bldg. Room A234A; mail stop: Earth & Planetary Sciences/IGPP. Applications are due no later than noon on Friday, February 16, 2007.

CDELSI - RESEARCH AWARDS

Applications should be in the form of a 5-6 page (maximum text) research proposal including:

  1. Cover page

a. Applicant’s name and email address.
b. Applicant’s major or graduate program.
c. Advisor(s)’ name, department and email address.
e. Title (or working title) of thesis project.
f. Request type (Undergraduate or Graduate; Research or Travel)
g. Total amount requested.

  1. Description of research project (3-4 page maximum):

a. State broad question(s) to be addressed AND specific hypothesis(es) to be tested.
b. Brief rationale, background (sufficient to understand context and relevance).
c. Detailed workplan including: Experimental or Sampling Design; Methods; Analyses;    Timeline; Possible Outcomes.
d. Significance and relevance:
      i.   Explain relevance of project to CDELSI goals. (website http://cdelsi.ucsc.edu)
      ii.  Explain project’s interdisciplinary aspects.
      iii. Explain scientific significance.

  1. Budget summary (1 page (last)) that includes:

a. Itemized list of items and amounts requested from CDELSI.
b. Justification for each item requested.
c. List all other sources and amounts of funds available for the project
d. Explain how CDELSI funding will improve the project.

  1. Supporting letter from student’s advisor(s), including confirmation of funding need. 
CDELSI - TRAVEL AWARDS

Awards are available for the 2007 calendar year, including summer 2007. Applications should be in the form of a 1-2 page (maximum length) letter that includes:

  1. a. Applicant’s name and email address.
    b. Applicant’s major or graduate program.
    c. Advisor(s)’ name, department and email address.
    d.  Title (or working title) of presentation or thesis project.
  2. a.  Name of the conference or workshop.
    b.  Location and dates of meeting.
    c.  URL or link to meeting web site.
  3. Copy of submitted abstract (text only), or draft of proposed abstract.
  4. Significance and relevance:
    a. Explain relevance of project to CDELSI goals. (website http://cdelsi.ucsc.edu)
    b. Explain project’s interdisciplinary aspects.
    c. Explain scientific significance or contribution.
  5. Brief statement of other funds available to support travel to meeting.
